August Garden

We moved our chicken pasture fence around the corn to try and keep the coon out.  We have our first two ears, along with 32 pints of pinto beans and 18 pints of white beans shelled and frozen. David is still shelling the black and red.  We have 1/2 a bushel of tomatoes picked and the jars washed for canning.  The tomatoes are back behind the corn, you can not see them, but they are prolific and turning red. Below is a beauty from the plot up front on the left along with my wonderful kale that feeds me one meal a week, and the king corn stalks.  Silver queen on the right suffered some wind damage yesterday, but should be ok.  big-tomato  blue-kale king-corn-stalk

Bean Field

bean-fieldBeginning on the right:  pinto, red, white, black, lima, french and romas, along with some okra, watermellon and squash.  The mexican bean bettle is (so far) only on the black beans.  I guess that is their favorite.  The lima’s are kind of sparse, so I put a second planting of green beans in the empty space.  Okra did not come up very well :( so I put in a second planting yesterday.  Below is our other two fields:  the potato field and squash field.  I just planted the squash yesterday, avioding the squash borer.

In the photo, the back is 4 rows of onions, 4 of young tomatoes, 2 rows of cole crops and green, then the half yellowcorn / half snow pea patch.   When the snowpeas finish, I will plant the silver queen whitecorn.   In the front to the right is strawberry bed and herbs, then a plot of brocolli (from seed) peppers (purchased due to seedlings failure) and roma tomatoes from seed.  Shelling Peas are out and corn is planted just in time for this rain.  Cole crops and some onions are ready to harvest.
